![]() “We had been working on a simplification of the core experience in preparation for a relaunch because we were really excited about our ability to deliver the experience we always wanted with the custom keyboards of iOS 8,” explains co-founder David King, a serial entrepreneur who sold his social gaming company Green Patch to Playdom (which sold to Disney) prior to starting the new Blippy. In September 2014, the company pulled Blippy from the App Store in anticipation of creating a new experience for iOS 8, which was then just arriving. Ultimately, that may have limited its growth. However, it arrived at a time before iOS 8, meaning it was a standalone experience. That app, which also made it possible to find and make animated GIFs, eventually grew to over 10,000 users. But in 2013, a different group of entrepreneurs launched a new Blippy after acquiring the Blippy domain from its prior owners. Those with long Internet memories may remember the name Blippy as being associated with that startup that tried and failed to “ socialize” consumer shopping data. The app serves to replace the earlier, also GIF-focused, Blippy iOS app, that was pulled from the App Store back in September. Speaking of which, PopKey understands that loading a bunch of moving GIFs on a keyboard, like Riffsy does, is annoying for three reasons: It’s overwhelming, can cause a lag in load time, and drains your battery.Ready for another GIF keyboard for iOS 8? Blippy has returned today with a new app that lets you create, save and discover new GIFs to use when messaging with your friends on your iPhone. In an ideal world, there’d be no copy/pasting, but at least these GIFs aren’t giant hi-res files that take forever to send. Here’s the clunky part: You then have to tap the text box of your conversation and paste the link in. This’ll automatically copy the link to it. After browsing and settling on a GIF - we’ll assume it’s of Jennifer Lawrence - you just need to tap it. The two both pop up as keyboards and let you choose a category of emotion or expression. PopKey’s main (read: only) competitor in this category is the Riffsy GIF Keyboard. PopKey has almost completely eliminated this problem. They’d have the URLs of a few of their favorites listed in a notes app, or wait to reply on their desktop with the Giphy browser extension. Prior to the GIF keyboard revolution, my super Internet-y friends and I all had slapdash methods of inserting GIFs in our text convos. I want a smart keyboard that gets me, and SwiftKey is the one.īest Keyboard to Impress and Eventually Annoy Your Friends: Keymoji When it comes to my digital correspondence, all I really want is to start typing and forget that there’s a computer analyzing my every word. But in the case of Fleksy, each time I came up with some new Chlo-cabulary, I was forced to manually enter it into my app dictionary. After one or two instances where I inserted an H into unsuspecting C-words, SwiftKey finally just understood this was a thing I did, and started recommending it. For example, I have a way of describing the activities and sensibilities of my cat, Chloe: chlimb, chlaw, chrazy, chrawl - the list is embarrassingly long. ![]() That being said, I found that SwiftKey was able to catch up with my strange inside jokes and made-up vocabulary much more quickly than Fleksy. If you lose your phone, or switch devices, you don’t have to start from scratch: All that tailoring from your original account will return as soon as you log in. It works like this: Once you create an account on either of the services and grant it access to various social accounts and your address book, it will gather information about you - the words you use, how you construct your sentences, your general tone - and store it safely in a constantly updated database. But only SwiftKey and Fleksy gather extra data on how you communicate, sifting through your conversations on different social platforms to inform their language-predicting algorithms.
